Great Western Prairie

This year we will be volunteering at the Great Western Prairie in Elmhurst.  The Great Western Prairie is a unique 6-acre parcel of untouched land that runs parallel to the Illinois Prairie Path from Spring Road to Salt Creek. It is home to more than 100 different types of native plants and dates back to the time before European settlement of the area.

We will be performing various tasks from picking up debris, cutting out invasive plants and quite possibly collecting seeds to help repopulate the native plants and to reconstitute other prairies around the Chicago area.  Volunteers are asked to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, sturdy closed-toe shoes and to bring work gloves and hats.  It also is suggested that you bring mosquito repellent and sun screen. Please bring loppers or other cutting tools, if you have them. Spouses and children are welcome to participate but the prairie is rather tall so it is not a good environment for small children.

We will be meeting at the Illinois Prairie Path located at Berkley Avenue and Prairie Path Lane in Elmhurst at 9 AM and working until Noon.  Parking is available along the Illinois Prairie Path.

Please contact Linda McInerney at 847-559-3909 or for more information.
