John Busch is the Protective Security Advisor for the Northern Illinois and Chicago Districts with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  His role is to support the nation’s efforts to ensure a safe and resilient United States of America.  

Drawing on almost 30-years of military and infrastructure protection experience ranging from infantry, military police and special operations for the Department of Defense, John has led more than 250 DHS threat and vulnerability assessments for public and private sector organizations across the Midwest.    

During a one-hour special presentation for IFMA Northern Illinois, John will  discuss the rise of Workplace Violence and Active Shooter incidents and  highlight the protective measures Facility Managers should consider implementing at their organizations while directing attendees to the resources available to prevent these tragedies.

About our speaker:

John Busch currently serves the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as the Protective Security Advisor (PSA) for Northern Illinois and the City of Chicago and is dedicated to supporting the nation’s efforts to ensure a safe and resilient America. In this roll, Mr. Busch provides infrastructure protection reach-back capacity for both the private sector and state and local partners. He also aids and assists in the protection and enhancement of existing critical infrastructure within the region. Mr. Busch also contributes to the development of the national risk picture by assisting with the identification, assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of risk to critical infrastructure at the regional, state, and local level.                    

Mr. Busch has over 20 years of military experience ranging in scope from infantry, military police, and special operations; he continues to serve as a member of the Army National Guard and currently holds the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He has significant combat and contingency operations experience via numerous deployments to Iraq/Middle East, the Balkans, and Trans-Saharan Africa. He is also one of only a handful of commissioned US Army Military Police Officers in the regiment’s history to have earned both the LT Matthew S. Coutu Distinguished Honor Graduate Award and the LT Timothy E. Price Peer Leadership Award upon completing the Military Police Officer Leadership Course.     

Mr. Busch also brings over 8 years of experience from his previous role directly contributing to the nation’s Infrastructure Protection efforts while supporting DHS via an Interagency Agreement with the Department of Defense. In this capacity, he served as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and senior advisor for both infrastructure and physical security systems and contributed to the development, refinement, and delivery of training curriculum for Critical Infrastructure assessment teams throughout the country. Mr. Busch has also directly supported or served as the assessment team lead on over 250 DHS threat and vulnerability assessments, ranging from Infrastructure Survey Tools (IST’s), Site Assistance Visits (SAV’s), Buffer Zone Protection Plans (BZPP’s), Infrastructure Visualization Platforms (IVP’s), and Regional Resiliency Assessment Projects (RRAP’s). Mr. Busch brings extensive experience to the PSA program in the fields of physical/technical security, threat and vulnerability assessments, operational/tactical analysis and planning, and interagency coordination/private sector partnership building.
